Description

MOT Type 1 (Bulk Bag or Loose Option)

MOT Type 1 is a crushed material, usually made from granite or limestone. Once compacted, it’s an extremely strong and hardwearing material. The size of MOT Type 1 crushed material is typically between 0-40mm.

Minimum bulk bag of MOT Type 1 packed weight 850kg.

Loose aggregates priced per 1 tonne. Loose option – collection only.

MOT Type 1, also known as subbase, is a coarse-grained mass commonly used as a layered material covering the subgrade (native material). Thanks to its hardwearing and strength, this granular aggregate is perfect for roads, driveways, patios, paths and even artificial grass.

MOT Type 1 meets the quality standards required by the Ministry of Transport (hence MOT) and it’s a granular material ideal for compact sub-base. It is created from crushed concrete and rubble. MOT Type 1 is made up of a mix of larger pieces measuring 40mm down to dust which compacts strongly to form a solid base, making it a great option to use on:

  • Roads
  • Pavements
  • Drives
  • Patios
  • Garden paths
  • Car parks
  • Trench fills
  • Over-site fills

Our blend of MOT Type 1 ranges from 40mm down to dust to provide an easily compacted aggregate. Subbase consists of a blend of Recycled Crushed Concrete, recycled brick, carboniferous limestone and asphalt, making it a sustainable and durable choice for your building and paving projects.

MOT Type 1 forms a stable sub layer that is needed to create a barrier between subgrade soils. Its’ function is to help prevent the pumping of fine-grained, subgrade soils, as it can lead to the loss of soil material beneath the slab edges and joints. It also provides a load-bearing capacity and flattens the surface prior to a top coating of block paving, pavers, shingle, asphalt or concrete. Thanks to its small and dust-like particles, it ensures minimal gaps in the sublayer when compacted.

How much MOT Type 1 should be used for hard landscaping?

MOT Type 1 forms a hardcore sub-base for all hard landscaping projects from patio paving to slab laying to driveway paving to artificial grass. It can also be used as a filling material. Usually, MOT Type 1 is laid at a compacted depth of 100mm (around 4 inches) for most patio projects and at a compacted depth of 150mm (around 6 inches) for domestic driveway projects. Compaction should be achieved by using a wacker plate also known as a Vibrating Plate compactor.

MOT Type 1 is commonly used by our clients for its levelling and filling purposes.

What’s the difference between MOT Type 1 and granite or limestone?

Granite and limestone are actually MOT Type 1 that has been filtered to retrieve the chippings of the desired size.

MOT Type 1 offers a much better level of compaction thanks to the presence of smaller particles and is generally a stronger aggregate than granite or limestone. On the other hand, granite and limestone are way more permeable, providing a fast-draining sub-base.

MOT type 1 is much less permeable, meaning that it will not allow the desirable passage of liquids and gasses through.
